Do you look in the mirror and feel that the face that stares back at you looks older than you feel on the inside? If the answer is yes, you certainly aren’t alone. Aging affects our bodies in a variety of ways, but our face tends to betray our advancing years far quicker than anywhere else. This is because as we age, the skin on our face loses much if its natural hydration and elasticity, causing it to become drier and thinner, and fine lines and wrinkles can form. It is also common to lose some of the natural volumes of our face, causing our cheeks to hollow and the skin around them and the jaw to sag.
Getting older may be unavoidable but looking older doesn’t have to be. There is a range of cosmetic treatments that can help to reverse the effects of the aging process and help you to enjoy firmer, smoother and more youthful skin. One of the latest solutions which are growing in popularity is microneedling.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses the principles of healing to regenerate the skin so that it looks smoother, healthier and more youthful. The procedure uses a special handheld device that contains dozens of tiny needles. This device is passed over the skin so that the needles can create countless tiny pinpricks into the surface layers of the skin. These are evenly spaced and applied with consistent pressure to ensure that they are the same depth across the face. It is not unusual for the wounds to draw a few spots of blood.
The purpose of creating these microscopic wounds is to prompt the body to heal them. To do this, the body will need to increase the amount of collagen and elastin is makes. These substances are key building blocks for the development of healthy, strong and supple skin. As the body makes new collagen-rich tissue, the new skin becomes more even in tone and texture.
Unsurprisingly, microneedling can be uncomfortable and so patients are given local anesthetic ahead of their procedure. The aftereffects of the treatment include swelling, soreness, and redness that is not dissimilar to mild sunburn. These usually abate within 48 hours of treatment and patients are given specific instructions on the best way to care for their skin while it heals. It’s important to note that it can take several weeks to a month or more to see the full benefit of the treatment since the results will not be visible until stimulated collagen production is well underway.
Microneedling can be used to treat a range of skin issues including wrinkles, scarring, acne, skin pigmentation problems, stretch marks, and rosacea. Your cosmetic specialist will be able to advise you if microneedling is an appropriate treatment for you.
There is a range of different benefits to microneedling, related to both the results of the procedure and the procedure itself when compared to other cosmetic techniques. These include:
